World Glaucoma Day 2019 ( Chief Guest: Mr. Jatin Bora, Prominent Assamese Film actor)



According to WHO’s report, Glaucoma is the second largest cause of irreversible blindness all over the world. Early diagnosis of the disease with appropriate medical intervention can prevent visual loss. To create awareness about Glaucoma eye disease among masses, ‘Glaucoma Week’ is observed worldwide every year and this year it is being observed from 10 th – 16 th March by Glaucoma Society of India, the apex body of the Glaucoma specialists of the country in conjunction with the World Glaucoma Association. As part of the various programmes and activities undertaken, a ‘Walk for Glaucoma’ has been organized all over the country.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, the premier eye care institution of the Northeast, on its part, is also observing the ‘Glaucoma Week’ and an ‘Awareness Walk for Glaucoma’ in Guwahati City on 11 th of March, 2019. In Guwahati, the ‘Walk’ started from Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya (SSN), 96, Basistha Road to Dispur Lastgate and return back to SSN, Guwahati. The ‘Walk’ for the noble cause was “flagged off” by famous film actor/director of Assamese Film Industry Mr. Jatin Bora from Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya at 07:00 A.M. Around 400 people comprising Trustees, Management Committee Members, Doctors and Staffs of Nethralaya and representatives from other Hospitals and Institutions, various local NGOs, school students, social welfare organizations, trade and business houses besides other individuals took part in the ‘Walk’ for a noble cause. The employees of Nethralaya were led by Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee ( Medical Director), Dr. Prafulla Sarma (HoD, Dept. Of Glaucoma), Dr. Sahinur Tayab (Associate Consultant, Dept. of laucoma) and Dr. Chengchira A Sangma (Consultant, Dept. of Glaucoma) of the Institution and a host of Consultants, Postgraduate Trainee Doctors, Executives, staffs and Paramedical Students of the Institution, wielding display banners and placards containing awareness messages about the Glaucoma disease, and wearing special cap for the occasion. Later after the awareness walk, Dr. Prafulla Sarma, a senior onsultant and Head of Glaucoma clinic at Nethralaya, addressed the participants of the event at a brief function organized by the Institution at the originating venue, throwing glaring light on the blinding ‘Glaucoma’ disease and its ill effects. He emphasized the need for getting one’s eyes checked up for ‘Glaucoma’ at periodic intervals and at the same time suggested certain “do’s’ and ‘don’ts” to be followed by a Glaucoma patient to keep the disease under check. He also explained in brief about the treatment facilities available at Nethralaya for Glaucoma disease. Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee, Medical Director & Trustee of the Institution, also spoke about the significance and social relevance of the event. Speaking on the occasion, the ‘chief guest’ of the function Sri Jatin Bora gave a brief account of the significance and relevance of the socialev ent being organized by the Nethralaya. He lauded the services being rendered by the Nethralaya for treating various diseases of the eye, more particularly ‘Glaucoma’, a silent menacing eye disease.
He was also appreciative of the effort taken by the Institution for creating awareness about the disease amongst the public by organizing the ‘Walk for Glaucoma’ and wished the campaign for such human cause to continue in the future also.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya authorities informed that ‘Free Community Eye- Screening Camps with awareness activity on Glaucoma’ on the occasion of “ World Glaucoma Week” is being organized at various Vision Centres of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya on 12 th ,13 th , 14 th , 15 th & 16 th of March 2019 at Bijaynagar, Sualkuchi, Sonapur, Morigaon & Hajo respectively to create awareness among the people
of rural areas.
