Was born on 20th December, 1937 in Guwahati. He graduated in Commerce from Gauhati University in 1959 and finally attained a Master’s Degree in Commerce in 1963. Involved in social work since his teenage years, Mr. Barthakur was known as a compassionate social worker, industrialist and philanthropist of not only Assam but the entire North East. He was well known for his profound contribution towards promoting the theatre movement of Assam. Mr. Bathakur was instrumental in the establishment of over 500 schools across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Sri Balaji Temple and Vivekananda Kendra in Guwahati. He finally served as the Vice Chairman of State Innovation and Transformation Ayog (SITA), Govt of Assam and played a crucial role towards development of entrepreneurial and industrial landscape of the state. He was associated with Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya as a Founder Trustee of the parent trust Sri Kanchi Sankara Health & Education since the 3rd of January, 1994 and was elevated to the post of Vice Chairman in 13th May, 2009. In 18th January, 2019 he was appointed as the Chairman of the parent trust and served in this capacity till his demise.
