Uveitis is a blinding inflammatory disease of the eye occurring in the middle coat of the eyeball. Eye consists of external coat comprising of cornea and sclera; middle coat consisting of uveal structures which is divided into iris, ciliary body and choroid and inner coat of the eye consisting of retina. Uveitis may present commonly with redness of the eye, pain, watering, photophobia, floaters and dimness of vision depending on types of uveitis. Uveitis can be anterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis and pan-uveitis depending on anatomical site(s) of involvement. Uveitis is associated with many underlying systemic diseases of the body and various investigations (ophthalmic with blood and radiological) are required to confirm the diagnosis. Appropriate treatments in the form of medicines are available to treat the disease. In some cases, local injections are given along with oral medicines, particularly oral corticosteroids and immune-suppressive medications. There are many causes of uveitis including infectious causes which need to be treated by a uveitis expert on the basis of the diagnosis.
Physicians, rheumatologist, chest physician etc are consulted by uvea specialist to co-manage the disease condition. There are some side effects of medications prescribed in uveitis which the uveitis specialist and treating physician will sensitize the patient and attendant. Meticulous and regular follow up of the patient is essential which must be there to detect the disease recurrence and complications. Uveitis can develop various complications like cataract, glaucoma, macular oedema, retinal detachment etc. All uveitis cases along with complications are treated and managed at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya.
