PEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY UNIT

Children are the future of any society, nation or country. Examination of a child is quite different from that of an adult. Children can be unpredictable, non communicative and uncooperative which may make the examination both time consuming and frustrating for a busy practitioner. The first thing is to gain the trust of the child for proper evaluation. This “rapport” is often first established in the waiting room which has been designed to be child friendly.

Paediatric ophthalmology focuses on the development of the visual system and the various diseases that disrupt visual development in children. The paediatric ophthalmology services at SSDN Guwahati are equipped to provide the best possible care for the child’s eyes. All conditions are diagnosed and managed with precision by experienced paediatric ophthalmologists with state of the art surgical care.

Common eye problems in children are refractive errors, squint, amblyopia, cataract, glaucoma, tumors, injuries etc.

Squint, also known as cross eyes, is the condition where the eyes do not work together. Treatment includes glasses, eye exercises or eye muscle surgery.

The management of cataract in children is much less straightforward than the management of cataract in adult. Cataracts in children can be part of multi-system, metabolic or genetic disorders and may be associated with other structural abnormalities of the eye. A cataract which is sufficiently dense to reduce the visual acuity significantly will result in amblyopia if it occurs before the maturation of visual system.

Another cause of concern in children is Retinoblastoma the most common intraocular tumour which manifests itself as a white reflex.

NEUROVISION CLINIC

Lazy eye or amblyopia is the term for poor vision in one or both eyes. It can result from refractive error, squint or several other causes. This needs to be identified and treated at an early age to recover vision. The gold standard of treatment is occlusion.
The new modality of treatment for amblyopia is based on “perceptual learning”. The term “perceptual learning” means a process in which, repetitive practice of specific controlled visual tasks leads to improvement in visual performance. This perceptual learning procedure trains the neuronal network by efficiently stimulating the neuronal populations and effectively promoting their spatial interactions.
The perceptual learning therapy program (NeuroVision’s Neural Vision Correction Technology) is a non-invasive software-based patient-specific, interactive perceptual learning tool based on visual stimulation. It facilitates neural connections at the cortical level through a computerized training regimen using Gabor patches to improve contrast sensitivity and visual acuity.

ROP CLINIC

A child born prematurely may suffer from retinopathy of prematurity and it is important to diagnose it early with prompt treatment.

FRESNEL PRISMS

Diplopia is a challenge to ophthalmologists due to its numerous underlying causes

Fresnel prisms can be considered in the initial treatment of symptomatic diplopia to avoid ophthalmic and postural manifestations.

ORTHOPTIC CLINIC:

We are blessed with two eyes but at times they are not able to work together. There are many reasons for that and one of them is muscle imbalance between the two which is addressed in this this clinic. Additionally the pandemic has increased screen timing which has added to the eye strain. Depending on the cause exercises, vision therapy, prisms can be planned to provide clear and single vision.

MYOPIA CLINIC

Myopia is a global health problem associated with not only vision impairment but also blinding complications. The myopia clinic addresses these issues with glasses, eye drops, soft contact lenses, ortho K soft lenses in addition to genetic counselling.

QUALITY CONTROL

The Pediatric Clinic follows strict quality control protocols. Regular training and updations on Quality Improvement are conducted. Pre Scheduled Calibration of Equipments are done for maintaining accuracy of results. Case studies and Scientific Presentations are made in National and International journals and forums.

CONTACT LENS CLINIC:

The contact lens clinic prescribes and fits patient with the best suitable contact lens after detailed evaluation and assessment. Contact lens is a thin lens placed directly on the surface of the eye. Contact lenses are considered medical devices and can be worn to correct vision, or for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons.

When compared with spectacles, contact lenses typically provide better peripheral vision. This makes them ideal for sports and other outdoor activities.
Functions Corrective contact lenses: Corrective contact lenses are designed to correct refractive errors like myopia, hypermetropia and could be either soft or RGP (Rigid gas permeable). Toric contact lenses are used to correct astigmatism.
Prosthetic contact lenses: These lenses help to improve the aesthetics of injured, deformed, or disfigured seeing or non-seeing eyes.
Therapeutic scleral lenses: A scleral lens is a large, firm, oxygen permeable lens that rests on the sclera and creates a tear-filled vault over the cornea. The cause of this unique positioning is usually relevant to a specific patient, whose cornea may be too sensitive to support the lens directly. Scleral lenses may be used to improve vision and reduce pain and light sensitivity for people suffering from growing number of disorders or injuries to the eye, such as severe dry eye syndrome, microphthalmia, keratoconus, corneal ectasia, etc.

ROSE K LENSES FOR KERATOCONUS

The ROSE K lens has a number of features that make it ideal for keratoconus:
1. Its complex geometry can be customized to suit each eye and can correct all of the myopia and astigmatism associated with keratoconus.
2. They are easy to insert, remove and clean.
3. They provide excellent health to the eye, because they allow the cornea to "breathe" oxygen directly through the lens.
4. Practitioners have the ROSE K trial set fitting system which achieves a first fit success in over 80% of patients internationally.

The contact lens clinic is fully equipped with state of the art equipment, infrastructure and expertise.

LOW VISION CLINIC

Loss of vision may affect the patient’s ability to read, write, work or travel independently. This loss because of its consequences can be devastating and frustrating often leading the person to depression and some even to suicide especially recent onset blindness due to diabetes.

The patient goes from doctor to doctor for the magic cure that will restore his vision. Doctors while dealing competently with the diseases are not aware of the patient’s reaction to the diminished vision.

Though their condition may be irreversible most often there is much help and hope that can be offered to patients through low vision rehabilitation services. Finally even if we cannot improve someone’s vision we can still do to improve their quality of life.

So with this in mind the Low vision services were launched at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Guwahati. Patients with low vision need special equipment to make the best use of their vision. By using these aids as well as lighting conditions, it is possible to continue with most activities.

Low vision optical devices can be grouped into two basic categories:

"Near" optical devices for activities such as reading, sewing, writing, and crafting.Common devices available are hand-held magnifiers, stand magnifiers, magnifying reading glasses, pocket magnifiers.

"Distance" optical devices for activities such as attending movies and sporting events; reading street signs and price tags; and identifying numbers on buses and trains.Devices available are hand-held telescopes, spectacle mounted telescopes, binocular telescopes, Ocutech, video magnifiers .
