Started his career as an advocate after completing his LL.B in 1961 from Calcutta University. He also served in various capacities during his judicial career spanning over 40 years. In the year 1983, he served as judge of the Gauhati High Court. In the year 1994, he took over as judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. In the year 1999, he was elevated as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. Finally he was elevated as judge of the Supreme Court of India. He retired on 31st March’2002. After his retirement, he served as Chairman of Assam Human Rights Commission. He was associated with Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya as a Founder trustee and Chairman of the parent trust Sri Kanchi Sankara Health & Educational Foundation from 03rd January’1994 till his demise. He was a great soul and a towering father figure of the institute.
