Under this collaborative project, SSDN provides free cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation to the children in the 33 districts of Assam. The District Program manager of ASSA, Government of Assam, along with local ophthalmologists conducts the screening procedure and the selected cases are referred to SSDN, Guwahati. Under this project the pediatric cataract surgeries and follow-ups are done on a regular basis.
SSDN-NPCB & VI, Government of India Collaboration Along with the National Program for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment, Govt. of India, Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya extends its community service in Assam and other North Eastern States through this program. Treatment for Cataract, Vitreo-Retina, Cornea and other services are provided. The district authorities also refer cases relating to complication of surgical cases (treatment and management of surgical problems) to SSDN. Moreover, SSDN is rendering service to the community as a training centre for ophthalmologists from all over India. The NPCB & VI, Government of India, sends the candidates for training and skill development at SSDN after a standard selection process, for a variable period of time. So far, SSDN has trained 9 long-term and 96 short-term NPCB & VI candidates and they are now working in different parts of the country. The State Program Officers of different States have expressed their satisfaction with the community activities of SSDN over the years.
Nagaland Screening Activity and Surgery in all Districts of Nagaland, Tripura and Others This was a special activity carried out by SSDN, in which, surgeons from Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya performed surgeries and trained ophthalmic surgeons of Nagaland to achieve their target on surgical performance of the State.
Blind School Survey The Institute of Community Ophthalmology, SSDN, has conducted surveys, rehabilitation and curative surgeries in all the blind schools in the North Eastern states. The reports have also been published in numerous leading journals
